Berlin

ZajentyK.
I've been very busy recently but I managed to find some time to write about our trip to Berlin from May.
[Let's not talk about travelling by train, because neither Polish nor German railways just didn't live up to our expectations... It was funny and pathetic at times, oh well....]

We visited quite a big chunk of the city's but only from the outside because two days just isn't enough for museum visits and there are soooo many interesting places to go to in Berlin that we just couldn't choose what to see! I'd like to recommend you the Berlin Welcome Card (available e.g.: at the main railway station). It has several options and includes the city transport fares and many discounts in various museums, restaurants and other tourist's attractions.

Of course we went to Potsdam and spent a day at the Sanssouci park, an enormous and beautiful place with many historic buildings and gardens. I wish I could show you everything we saw there! I highly recommend going there in the Summer when the flowers are in full bloom, there is a garden with 400 types of old roses there!

Wybraliśmy się też do parku Ogrody Świata, gdzie odtworzono kilka założeń ogrodowych pochodzących głównie z Dalekiego Wschodu.
We also went to the Gardens of the World, a park with small reconstructed gardens mainly from the Far East.

What we thought about Berlin?
We absolutely loved it! It's a big modern city with a mixture of traditional and contemporary buildings, bricks and mortar next to glass and steel. It has a great net of transport's (several urban railway lines and several subway lines plus buses and trams), it's very cyclists friendly place, full of parks, gardens, museums and cafes. I must admit I'd gladly move to Berlin and live there for some time to enjoy this place a bit more. For that I could even start learning German! ^^ We will definitely go back there because our visit was just a tip of the iceberg of what this city has to offer!

What was the biggest surprise?
The population of Berlin's. Looking at people in the streets you could see that 30% were of the Turkish origin, 30% of the Chinese one, 20% from African countries and the small rest were the white skin Germans. Of course there were the proportions in the centre of Berlin, it was different in the outskirts.

The only drawback was that Berlin is a really dirty city......... (we had similar opinion after our visit to Dublin) Seriously, when we compare Berlin and Warsaw, our capital is a really clean and tidy place! Ugly scribbles of graffiti everywhere possible, pieces of garbage everywhere, filth, mice and cigarette buds on the subway platforms.... On the last day of our visit we went to the Spree river bank where people were having picnics on the lawns, sitting..... among the heaps of papers and cups/bottles from the previous night's parties...
I really don't know why that's the case. I've always perceived the Germans as a clean and tidy nation. We could easily point a finger towards the immigrants but I don't think it's that easy. Municipal authorities have a lot to do in that field.

Ryszard was waiting for us with a freshly made tea!.... *^-^*~~~

You must have read this far and thought - wait a minute... they didn't eat anything there?.....
*^O^*
The post with our culinary adventures will appear soon because I thought there are too many photos for one post. So stay tuned for the Berlin adventures, part two. ^^*~~

Tam i z powrotem, czyli wyprawa do krainy łosia i lukrecji

"Warsaw, 1970's, detective Kostrzewa is on her way to the crime scene to solve a murder mystery!" *^w^*
(I've heard today that 1970's fashion is back now, so with my jeans and big sunglasses I am suddenly a fashionable person, ha! *^0^*)

Dzisiaj obiecana relacja z naszej weekendowej wycieczki.
W piątkowe przedpołudnie we czwórkę wyruszyliśmy pociągiem TLK IC do Gdyni.
Today I'm going to tell you about our weekend trip.
On Friday early afternoon we set off on a journey towards Gdynia. I do not recommend the TLK InterCity train... It's old, smelly and the toilet is an outrage!

Gdynia was only a stop on our way to further destination. We had some time after arrival so we decided to eat some lunch there and it wasn't easy, the restaurants kept closing as we went along the street from the Station and it was only just after 6 pm!.... Lucky for us we decided on a Czerwony Piec (Red Oven) restaurant and we had some great salad and pizzas.

Then we went to the ferry terminal and in the evening we set off to Sweden. *^0^*
We already visited Karlskrona several time in the past, sometimes on one day trips like this one, sometimes on the way to Viking events in Foteviken and Borre. The town in not very interesting (not in lat Winter anyway), but it's all about the ferry trip, getting to know Sweden, doing some sight seeing, trying the food, that's why we travel - to experience something uknown.

What can you do on a ferry? For example, you can buy stuff at a ferry shop (duty free shop in the past, now only with lower prices although the alcohol is a bargain for the Swedes, in Poland we have even lower prices!). You can eat dinner at a restaurant, have a drink in a bar or dance in the night club. You can visit a SPA or have fun with slot machines. Or just sit outside on a deck and admire the views although this time the weather was too cold, wet and windy for that!

*^O^*~~~ (wygrała zresztą i tę paczkę cukierków i zestaw olejków The Body Shop!)
There's always a lottery at the shop - you draw tickets for 20 Swedish crowns each and you can win a packet of sweets or a 1,5 l bottle of whisky, and my friend Ania did just that! *^O^*~~~ (she also won that packet of sweets and a set of four The Body Shop oils and Essie polish, lucky girl!)

W piątek o 9:00 rano dopłynęliśmy do Karlskrony i ruszyliśmy w miasto.
On Friday morning at 9:00 we landed in Karlskrona and went to town.

Of course we started our day with a breakfast and we found a great place called Espresso House, where I had the best Chai latte in my life. ^^*~~ A nice contemporary interior, a great selection of different drinks, sandwiches and cakes and the staff speaking fluent English - the best recommendations. The place has some tables outside that face the promenade and the main square so in Spring and Summer it must be a nice place to sit and sip your coffee.

Our main goal was to visit the Marine Museum. We've already being there twice but our friends haven't, and some new exhibitions were added since our last visit, for example the submarine that you could enter and see the interior! After leaving the museum we wanted to walk around the town but it was very cold and windy.

So we went back to the town's square and had fried fish/shrimps for lunch from the Fisk and Rakor Habibi foodstall. It was really delicious!

Takie jednodniowe wycieczki do Szwecji polecam szczególnie późną wiosną i latem, kiedy można sobie pospacerować po Karlskronie i popodziwiać kamieniczki i park nad wodą.
We only had some time left for a short visit to the supermarket to see what's new and interesting as far as Swedish food, and as usual we bought some Koppaberg cider and a blue cheese paste plus a pearl sugar for kanelbullars. ^^*~~ We went back to the ferry and came back to Poland. Such one day trips to Sweden are nice in late Spring and Summer when you can take a walk around the town and admire the pretty houses and a park at the sea.

We went from Gdynia to Gdańsk by train and spent there a couple of hours waiting for the train back to Warsaw. Way too short! I'd love to live there permanently! I love Gdańsk, the atmosphere of that city and the fact that the sea is so close!... ^^*~~

Bar CiCo (Come in and chill out) serwuje takie śniadania, że proszę siadać! *^O^*~~~
For breakfast we chose the place which was fully booked (and we had such high expectations towards it...), so we went elsewhere and it was the best what we could choose! *^v^*
Bar CiCo (Come in and chill out) serves such breakfasts that you just cannot wish for more! Scrambled eggs or sausages and a plateful of meat, cheese, smoked salmon and veggies, coffee or tea and crispy bread, and a plate of fruit for a dessert, all that for a great price! *^O^*~~~

Did you know that on Saturday there was a National Pi Day in America? We celebrated it at the Pikawa cafe. ^^ Frankly speaking, the choice was very difficult because there are so many interesting looking cafes and bar in Gdańsk, there are at least five on Piwna street that I really wanted to visit! Pikawa is a big but cozy place with a modern interior, relaxing atmosphere and friendly staff. There are yummy teas, coffees, chocolates, fresh juices, cocktails, desserts and alcohols.

And then there was already time to go home. I love Gdańsk and I'll try to go back there soon for longer so I could visit more places and enjoy the city. (And there is my friend there with whom I didn't have time to meet this time!) *^v^*

Back from Prague

We came back home yesterday safe and sound and we really, really enjoyed our trip, on many levels.

We stayed at our friends' who went there from Poland to work, and of course many conversations tackled the job subject, which in the near future may or may not result in some decisions made by Robert and the consequences of his decisions.

I'm not writing anything more about it at this stage, not because I'm superstitious (I'm not!), but because there isn't much more to say, but I'll keep you posted if the situation changes in any way.

Suffice to say, the climate is warmer in Prague, beer is cheap and tasty, pubs and cafes are countless, architecture is beautiful and inspiring, and all the Poles we know who went there and found the jobs in IT business lead very happy, relaxed, dignified lives, and we are really tired of everyday financial struggle here (not to mention the stupidity and incompetence of Polish politicians...).

Now, let's have some strawberries and some great Czech beer (*^v^*), and let me show you some photos from the trip.

We left early morning on Friday and 120 kms from Warsaw we stopped at the picturesque restaurant for breakfast. Not only did it look stunning, the food was delicious and fairly low priced! If you're ever going to travel along route nr 8 from Warsaw to Wrocław I highly recommend this place, it's called "Zniwny Lan" which can be translated as "Harvest Corn-field", and it's in Gomulin, between Piotrków Trybunalski and Bełchatów. ^^
There is even a cat visit on your lap included in the meal ^^.

Prague by night - photo from the Charles Bridge.

Here are the photos of a beautiful Prague architecture - just a small bunch because wherever you turn there is something pretty to see so I could just upload and upload the photos endlessly. ^^

We even spotted some fellow Goth tourists! ^^

Look, a sheep! *^v^* (in fact, it's the restaurant "The Red Sheep").

I visited the MarLen yarn & fabric shop at Karolina Svetle 12, but unfortunately it was closed on Saturday.

Of course I didn't forget to celebrate the World Wide Knit In Public Day with some knitting in public (in an Afghan restaurant, in fact! ^^). Can you tell what I'm knitting? These are my Opal anklets, still haven't finished them though...

What I brought from Prague apart from photos and memories?
Well, because it's a high tourists season all the souvenirs were ridiculously expensive, so we just bought some crates of good Czech beer ^^ and some crafty bits - two inkle looms (one for my friend Kate) and a drop spindle (a gift for somebody, but I cannot tell you the details because this person may read my blog and she will know... ^^).

I came from Prague enchanted and inspired, and I'm already thinking about new craft challenges, but let's leave it for later, because this week I have some past projects to finish and some new projects to start and finish quickly (before the owner of the on-line gallery LudowoMi goes on holiday in the middle of June, yikes!...)

Now, for something different - specially for Totoro, who asked me about the good yarn shops in Warsaw: the biggest choice you will find at two big Shopping Malls, Galeria Mokotow (Mokotow district, Woloska street), and The Blue City (Ochota district, Jerozolimskie Avenue). There you will find both traditional wools and cottons as well as lots of novelty yarns. You may be surprised with the prices lower than you expected, because we generally have less expensive yarns here. ^^
I hope you'll have w great time in Warsaw! ^^
